How Does Acupuncture Help with Pregnancy Support?

Pregnancy is such an exciting time — but let's be honest, it can also be pretty tough on your body! From morning sickness to back pain to sleepless nights, many mums-to-be in Randwick and across Sydney are turning to acupuncture for natural, gentle support throughout their pregnancy journey.

As a registered acupuncturist based in Randwick with over 10 years of experience, I've supported hundreds of women through every stage of their pregnancy. Here's what you need to know about how acupuncture can help.

Is Acupuncture Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes! When performed by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy. We simply avoid certain acupuncture points as a precaution. Always make sure your practitioner is registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency).

1. Goodbye Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting affect up to 80% of pregnant women, especially in the first trimester. Acupuncture is one of the most popular and well-researched natural remedies for morning sickness. Many of my patients notice a real difference after just 2–3 sessions. I often work on a point called PC6 on the inner wrist — it's gentle, effective, and completely drug-free.

2. Relief from Back Pain and Pelvic Discomfort

As your baby grows, your posture and centre of gravity change — and your back and hips often feel the strain! Acupuncture helps relax tight muscles, reduce inflammation, and ease that deep aching pain in your lower back and pelvis. Many patients tell me this is the first thing that actually gives them relief.

3. Calming Anxiety and Improving Sleep

Pregnancy hormones can make your mind race at 3am! Acupuncture has a deeply calming effect on the nervous system. It helps lower stress hormones, reduce anxiety, and improve the quality of your sleep — something every pregnant mum desperately needs. Think of it as a reset button for your mind and body.

4. Turning a Breech Baby with Moxibustion

If your baby is in a breech position around 34–36 weeks, a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique called moxibustion may help encourage your baby to turn head-down naturally. It involves gently warming a specific point near your little toe using a herb called moxa. It sounds a little unusual but it's completely painless — and many of my patients have had great results!

5. Preparing Your Body for Labour

From around 36 weeks, many women come in for weekly 'birth prep' sessions. These treatments help soften the cervix, encourage the baby to engage, and get your body ready to go into labour naturally. Women who receive pre-birth acupuncture often report shorter labours and a greater sense of calm and readiness going into birth.

What About After the Baby Arrives?

Acupuncture doesn't stop being helpful once your baby is born! It can support your recovery after birth, help with postnatal mood, boost milk supply if you're breastfeeding, and restore your energy levels. New mums are welcome here — bubs in arms totally fine!

Does Private Health Insurance Cover It?

Great news — many Australian private health funds (including Medibank, BUPA, NIB, and HCF) cover acupuncture under extras. Check your policy or give your insurer a quick call to find out your rebate.
